Over the yeras more adults are watching Tv whereas the younger generation arent really watching it as much as they used to.

The younger audience is watching a lot less Tv than they used to before therefore the older audience are watching more as they get older.3) Does the report suggest audiences are satisfied with public service broadcasting TV channels?

Goldsmiths report
Read this report from Goldsmiths University - A future for public service television: content and platforms in a digital world.
1) What does the report state has changed in the UK television market in the last 20 years?
There has been substantial growth over time in viewing to the PSBs’ ‘portfolio’ channels, going some way to offset the decrease in viewing to the main PSB channels.
2) Look at page 4. What are the principles that the report suggests need to be embedded in regulation of public service broadcasting in future?
Public service media should not be regulated simply in relation to the impact of their content and services on the wider media market.

Channel 4 has been critisised a lot for not doing enough for older children. Channel 4 should not be privatised – neither in full or in part
6) How should Channel 4 operate in future?
In the future Channel 4 should significantly increase its provision for older children and young adults and restore some of the arts programming that has been in decline in recent years.
7) Look at page 10 - new kids on the block. What does the report say about new digital content providers and their link to public service broadcasting?
The new content now appears outside the public service system: from Sky and other commercial broadcasters, on subscription video-on-demand services such as Netflix and Amazon,

RECEPTION THEORY
The dominant reading of this Reebok advert shows that 50 cent has understood that his past is his past by saying I am what I am. Reebok is using 50 cent as an example that no matter what happens in your life there is always another solution and that you can come back from anything, No matter how bad your past is there is always a way to a better future.
The dominant reading would be the audience seeing the that 50 cent was chosen because he will be able to get in touch more with the younger generation than anyone else. The negotiated reading would show that he has been through the tough stages of life therefore he is a good role model to the younger generation and allows them to not make the same mistakes that he did.

The counter reading would be that Reebok is bias in using him instead of a normal everyday person to advertise the rand since he is a famous rapper/actor and already has a lot of money.

Genre factsheet
1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.
In terms of content I would still say that this genre is horror because of the overall narrative of the show for example a boy goes missing and the narrative is to figure out who took him and why.
2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Fact sheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.
In season 1 episode 1 of stranger things the show starts off with 4 friends who are all playing a game together. it is late outside and they decide to head home, this is when one of them takes a path through a forest to get home. When he gets home he starts to realise that there may be an intruder in his shed. When he goes to the shed the light flickers and this is when Will disappears.
3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.
From stranger things Mike fits Prop's character role because he is always leading the team and on numerous occasions he has risked himself to safe his friends.
From Arrow Oliver Queen fits the hero role because he saves lives as a superhero which means that he is willing to put others before himself and this would fit Props role.
From the Flash Barry Allen fits the hero role because he also is willing to save other instead of himself people that he doesnt eve know. Also, he is very brave and doesn't fear much.
4) Give an example of a binary opposition.
Good vs Evil Protagonist vs antagonist
5) What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?
6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?
7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:

Audience Theory
1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence?
Yes i do believe that the media is responsible for antisocial behaviour because a lot of the younger generation are spending more time on their phones and on apps such as Instagram and Snap chat and they could see things that could make them upset. Also if they are seeing videos of violence than they may be tempted to copy what they see.
2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples.
This generation relies heavily on their phones meaning that it is very likely that sometimes they will see things that they wont want to and this could give them the wrong idea about things especially if they are young becasue from a young age it is easier to be influenced.
3) Research five examples of moral panic from the last 50 years. To what extent was the media responsible for these moral panics? Was the concern in society justified? How have things changed as a result of these moral panics?
Satanic Ritual Abuse
In the 1980s, parents around the country were gripped by an overpowering fear that their local preschool was actually a haven for vicious sexual abuse, driven by a Satanist agenda and brought to light only when children's memories were "recovered."
Ebola
The intentional transmission of the deadly Ebola virus from the dark continent of Africa to unsuspecting white people. The 2014 Ebola panic is all too real, with nearly 12,000 victims and over 4,000 dead in Africa.
Flashing Your Lights Will Get You Killed By a Gang
As part of a gang initiation, prospective members are instructed to drive with their lights off, then follow the first person who flashes their lights (to indicate their lights are off), stalk them, and murder them.
4) Read this introduction to an academic paper on technopanics. What examples are given of technopanics that create fear in society?
5) How does the author suggest that technopanics should be addressed - rather than through government regulation?
"To the extent that these concerns are valid, they are best addressed by ongoing societal learning, experimentation, resiliency, and coping strategies rather than by regulation. If steps must be taken to address these concerns, education- and empowerment-based solutions". This suggest that there are moral ways to stop Techno-panics.
6) Do you think the internet should be regulated? Should the government try and control what we can access online?
No I dont think the government should try and control what we watch because however they should try harder to keep kids out of websites that they shouldn't be on also for Instagram and Snap chat they should try a little harder to make sure that younger kids can stay away from it.
7) Apply Gerbner's cultivation theory to new and digital media. Is the internet creating a fearful population? Are we becoming desensitised to online threats, trolling and abuse?
A lot of people end up taking their lives because of internet trolls and being bullied online especially the younger generation, therefore I think its very important that the younger generation stay away from social media apps that may be harmful for them.
8) Is heavy internet use something we should be worried about in society? How would you define 'heavy internet use'?
We should be more afraid for the younger generation because technology is always improving therefore soon it will be more easier than ever for them to get sucked into the technology world. Also parents should make sure that their children aren't watching the wrong things becasue it is really easy for them to be influenced.

Video Feedback
3) Type up your feedback from fellow students.
4) Now reflect on your work and write your own comments. Add three WWWs and three EBIs underneath the rest of your feedback.
WWW: I believe that the the contrapuntal sound used against the punisher clip was really good because the punisher was killing people in the scene and the music was really happy and joyful. Also the music at the start of the video was very good and parrallel how ever I shouldn't have made both the videos parallel.
5) Learner response: compare your own video against your evaluation of the top three videos in the class. Whose did you think was best and why? How could you have improved your own video?
I think that samies work was the best in the class because it had all the key concepts for example it had short and good clips that were very catchy and grabbed the readers attention quickly.
- Great use of contrapuntal sound
- Video was really interesting
- The beginning should not only be parallel
- The video should have been longer
- Don't do homework late at night

Genre
General
1) Why did you choose the text you are analysing?
The reason that I chose stranger things text is because it really stands out to me for example the San Serif text really catches the viewers eye.
2) In what context did you encounter it?
I was recommended the show by all my friends and after watching it I immediately became a big fan of the show and binge watched the rest of show.
3) What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?
When i was told about the show i was told that it was a family show but it did have a bit of horror to it however.when i saw the text i was 100% sure that it would be horror because of the colour scheme which was black and red.
4) To what genre did you initially assign the text?
Initially I assigned the text to a family friendly TV show with a bit of horror and mystery because this is what my teacher had told me and this is what all my friends had told me too.
5) What is your experience of this genre?
My experience with the genre of horror is actually a lot because i enjoy the thrill of watching a horror movie because of all the turns and the mystery. I am a huge fan of Stephen Kings horror books and movies such as IT.6) What subject matter and basic themes is the text concerned with?
The text straight a way gives of a horror vibe because of the San Serif text and as i mentioned before the red and black colour scheme gives of a horror vibe especial the darkness around the Title.
7) How typical of the genre is this text in terms of content?
In terms of content I would still say that this genre is horror because of the overall narrative of the show for example a boy goes missing and the narrative is to figure out who took him and why.
8) What expectations do you have about texts in this genre?
The expectations that I have about the text in this genre are the same as the title for example i expect them to be along the same line as the title which is a San Serif text.
9) Have you found any formal generic labels for this particular text (where)?
The formal generic label for this text is San Serif I know this because I recognise that all the letters are joined together and the capital letters have a pointy edge to them.10) What generic labels have others given the same text?
Others have agreed with me that the text is San Serif because it is widely recognisable and people can tell straight away that it is San serif.
11) Which conventions of the genre do you recognise in the text?
The main convention that stands out to me are definitely the colours for example the colours that are being used ( red and black) are associated with horror especially red which is associated with blood.
12) To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?
To me it doesn't really stretch the conventions of its genre because it is short and snappy and it really stands out as a horror TV show.
13) Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre?
The text departs from the conventions of the genre because it could have used a better font that is more recognised with horror. San serif is more associated with power and dominance.14) Which conventions seem more like those of a different genre (and which genre(s))?
The San Serif texts reminds me off a genre which is more about power and strength than horror and mystery. although the colour of the texts makes up for the San Serif.
Mode of address
1) What sort of audience did you feel that the text was aimed at (and how typical was this of the genre)?
I feel that the text was aimed at a teenage audience not too young or old this is because there is no actual blood used however the colour red represents blood.2
) How does the text address you?
This text addresses me as horror mainly because of the colour that is being used in the poster and also because of how the text is presented.
3) What sort of person does it assume you are?
It assumes that i am the sort person who enjoys watching horror movies and TV shows and am mature enough to watch the show although there is no graphic images.
4) What assumptions seem to be made about your class, age, gender and ethnicity?
The assumptions made about class is that i am middle class, ethnicity is probably that i am white and age would probably around 15, 16, 17
.5) What interests does it assume you have?
It assumes that i have an interest in horror movies and TV shows and that i am a mature person I say this because San serif is a text used with mature people.
Relationship to other texts
1) What inter-textual references are there in the text you are analysing (and to what other texts)?
The main text on screen is "Stranger Things" the text is written in San Serif and it takes up most of the page in fact it is really the only thing on the page. It is outlined in red.
2) Generically, which other texts does the text you are analysing resemble most closely?
Another text that my texts resembles is Doctor Strange the way that they are both written is very simple and they both look like they are San serif.
3) What key features are shared by these texts?#
The key features in the texts are that they are both San serif and they are both written similarly.
4) What major differences do you notice between them?
The only real major difference is that they are both different colours one is gold and one is a dark black
1) Why did you choose the text you are analysing?
The reason that I chose stranger things text is because it really stands out to me for example the San Serif text really catches the viewers eye.

Another text that my texts resembles is Doctor Strange the way that they are both written is very simple and they both look like they are San serif.

Semiotics: icon, index, symbol blog task
1) Find three examples for each: icon, index and symbol. Provide images or links.
Icon:
The Skull and cross bones represent death and danger so this means that when someone sees this they will be able to understand that there is danger ahead or dangerous items in a product.
Index:
Symbol:
2) Why are icons and indexes so important in media texts?
Icons and indexes are important because they show what the image stands for so that the business can get a image across too their audience but you have to make sure that the image doesn't portray the wrong image because this can be disastrous for the business.
3) Why might global brands try and avoid symbols in their advertising and marketing?
Sometimes when there are symbols in the poster they can be misinterpreted for something else and sometimes that will spark something in the customers which makes them really angry if the symbol comes across as rude or inappropriate it can be a disaster for the business because it makes them look really bad
4) Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) where the producer has accidentally communicated the wrong meaning using icons, indexes or symbols. Why did the media product fail?
The reason that this advertisement failed is because it gave of the wrong image to all its customers. The cups too viewers look like the famous world trade centres which collapsed. The grass around the image looks like buildings and the dragonfly that is seen in the background looks like a plane which is heading straight towards the cups.
5) Find an example of a media text (e.g. advert) that successfully uses icons or indexes to create a message that can be easily understood across the world.
From the message continuous quality is quality you trust we can tell that because coke always produce to the best of their ability and never fail to impress you can always trust them therefore their quality is always contentious

Media makeover
I have made have made half my video black and half my video white. This can make the video more spooky and add more mystery. White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. Black is associated with power, fear, mystery, strength, authority, elegance, formality, death, evil, and aggression, authority, rebellion, and sophistication. This will give the video two sides and show the positives as well as the negatives. Also throughout the video the light goes from black to white it dips in and out which is a good effect for the video. also the music is really creepy and eerie which adds mystery to the video.

Reception Theory
denotation, connotation, colour, pose, framing, composition, size, type of shot, subject matter, setting, lighting.
Denotation: This is poster made by the brand Reebok who are mostly known for their comfortable shoes all across the world. The celebrity that is in the poster is 50 Cent he is a well known rapper, actor and businessman. On May 24, 2000 50 Cent was shot 9 times at point blank range and managed to survive was seemed like an almost certain death. The text on the page "I am what I am" is written in an old font which
could mean that that 50 cent is an older celebrity and he brings knowledge to Reebok.
Connotation: 50 cent was more famous in the 19's which could suggest that the Reebok are a little old school. Also the black and white would also back this up because a lot of the time black and white images are usually used in older papers and where more famous in previous years.
This is a wide shot which suggests that there's a lot to show, 50 cent covers half the page which shows how important he is that he takes up most of the page.
There are three different fonts on the page which could suggest that Reebok stands for more than one thing for example the writing in the middle is old and more ancient than modern however the writing on the top of the page the writing has a more modern look towards it and it which suggests that Reebok can do old school and new styles.
Because of the fingerprints in the background and the quote we can infer that you should take advantage of today because tomorrow is never promised to anyone.
Denotation: This is poster made by the Under Armour who are mostly known for their sports clothing all across the world. The celebrity that is in the poster is Anthony Joshua he is a well known British boxer, Anthony Joshua is proof that anyone can change as he came from a harsh background he was arrested on conspiracy to sell drugs only to win gold at Olympics 2 years later. The writing which is Beyond the shadow of doubt also backs my point because a lot of people doubted him because he came to boxing late and no one believed in him.
Connotations: The writing suggest that you can do anything no matter who doubts you and doesn't believe in you. Also because AJ is on the poster it will automatically make you believe this if you know about his struggle.
The lighting could suggest the doubt because when no one believes you, you are all alone therefore the darkness really presents how lonely you are. Although as you can see the darkness ends after were AJ is standing which suggest that once you reach a certain point nothing can stop you.
This is a wide shot which suggest that there is a lot to show however again a lot of the page is empty which could suggest that there is a lonely path until you get to where AJ is with his career so you should never give up because success will come slowly.
